As a libertarian (the first kind, mostly) I detest the vast majority of Federal Government beyond national defense and providing a higher level of dispute resolution than the states can provide.

As a Conservative (the non-hyphenated kind) I've come to tolerate more government than I care to have, and understand that we MUST not (not just can not) make the sorts of radical changes to our social structure that would be required to get back to a constitutional and "moral" government.

There are no one-issue conservatives. There ARE one issue republicans.

Reagan won, and the Republicans continue to win because of two issues. Abortion and Gun Control. When the Democrats became the party of Abortion On Demand and the party of No Guns Left Behind they alienated large numbers of voters. Voters who were essentially "moderates" in that they don't mind social programs they just want them kept in check, except for whatever their pet issue is.

I've met MANY gun control "activists" who were basically "Skip Jackson" democrats--strong on defense, anti-communist, but pro-union, and socially moderate in most things. When the Democrats when hard left, they became republicans. and started voting for and pushing for Republicans who saw the world their way.

You and I are Conservatives first. We *have* principles. We can (and do) argue about what those are and should be, but we never argue about whether we should have them. I can't speak for you, but the reason *I* argue this is because I lived without them, and with others who didn't have them, and saw what the world would be like if we didn't hold our selves to something however:

They will say anything, do anything, spin and massage whatever they need to get elected.

Did you read what I wrote? It answers the questions you didn't ask that seem to keep befuddling you. Meaning no disrespect. It happens. But this time I'm right.

I agree that we too often buy into liberal media definition of "moderate Republican." If, like that Dede NY-23 woman, you agree with abortion on demand, closed union shops, big spending liberalism, leftish Supreme Court justices, defense spending cuts, "celebration of diversity" etc. you're not a "moderate". You're a liberal. That's where all the confusion is coming in. McCain and Guiliani are "moderates". Guiliani had to run in a lefty city, so his positions were politically understandable. Dede what's her face lived in one of the state's most GOP districts. She grabbed the GOP mantle to bluff her way in. Don't think for a second the media considered Strom Thurmond, in his donkey days, a "moderate" Democrat. He was conservative. Funny, "liberal Republican" used to be an acceptable label (Nelson Rockefeller/John Lindsey). But you know why that's gone by the wayside: If a Republican opposes a "moderate", that makes him "immoderate." In other words, an extremist. That fits the media template.

I think part of the reason that we have such difficulty on the right side of the spectrum is that we continue to play by the left's rules. It is the left's game to label groups. By doing so, they keep their following fractured and weak and grudgingly willing to accept (intra-party) compromises to advance "the cause."

To my way of thinking, individual liberty competes with government to occupy the same space. Each time government gets bigger, individual liberty is squeezed into a smaller and smaller area of that space.

Liberty is what conservatives with to conserve. Anything else is creeping authoritarianism. It is a fool's errand to engage in labeling any particular brand of authoritarianism, because the academics are always at the ready to dispute each turn of phrase. From a worm's eye view, there is no difference between fascism, communism or theocracy. They are all just different names for total government control.

I think this has to be the acid test for conservatives. If you're against some kinds of authoritarianism (health care reform), but for some others (vice taxes), well you are merely arguing that your brand of authoritarianism is better than the alternative.

A true conservative will understand that we don't need a budget that fits our government, but a government that fits our budget.

I agree with your RINO assessment as I thought the same thing about that comment. My question would be more if that person is a one issue voter or not. Like, would he be willing to sacrifice capitalism and individual liberty based on the promise of a federal gay marriage law? Those are the differences between principles and principles you're talking about.

That's why I completely agree with this post. You state your case and articulate your principles and stand by them. You don't make fun of Sarah Palin and Christians in the hopes that a bunch of independents and moderates are going to think you're cool and automatically go along with whatever else you're saying.
