Thanks for the tip. I'm making a note of it. I still have a yen for the slot cars...

My 2 yr old is a train nut. After trying a cheap plastic train that did not work well, I have upgraded to an MTH O-gauge setup. According the internet hobby sites this should be a heavy durable train, that while not 2 yr old proof, can handle some rough housing. We will find out after Christmas. MTH is one brand that was left off the amazon links, it is a little cheaper than Lionel.

For slot cars I recommend the AFX Super International set. Its a large set that a careful web search can find for around 150. I got it for my older daughters, but my 2yr old boy loves its, and can actually operate it with a lot of help.

HO scale is the answer. Doesn't take up much room and starter sets (ready to run) can be had for $50 or $60. I just took delivery of the set pictured for about that money. It's beautiful. A lot of people used to set them up once a year to run around the Christmas tree. Tradition. Also trains are an excellent way for relatives to shop for several years. No more pink bunny suits from Aunt Cora. She can chip in with a station or a cattle car. It's the Lionel stuff that is big and pricey.

Don't give up so easily. It's a great way tyo spend quality time playing with kids that makes you feel like a kid again too.

Yeah, there's that, too. We have a small cozy house. My older son likes the big Legos for little kids. They are fine, as long as the dog doesn't get hold of them (like she got hold of his sandwich yesterday...but that's another story).

That's my main problem with them. They demand large chunks of stable floorspace that can't be repurposed without disassembling the whole mess.

My son is a Lego fanatic, as I was. As far as I'm concerned, they're very nearly the perfect toy; they demand and reward imagination, they can be reused indefinitely, they're nearly indestructible under normal use, and the whole mess can be stuffed in a large plastic tote. And thanks to the mindstorms line, now they're even teaching the basics of programming.

One problem: look at the prices! Between my destructive 2 y/o and my 50 Lb puppy chew-machine, there's no way I'm getting a $250 plus locomotive for my kids.

But like Lake, we also have a wooden train set and a train table in the kids' room, complete with environment stuff that they can arrange. And we keep the dog away from it, although she did get the police car that came with the train town. Sadly, it will never drive again.
