Alrighty! An explanation of my including "The Professionals". I'm 44 years old and most of the "great" westerns were shot 30 or so years before me up until the year I was born (1967).

I was 12 when I saw "The Professionals" on TV and remember vividly the impression it made on me.

A few things that stood out:

Lee Marvin probably is second only to Humphrey Bogart in being able to convey a feeling or emotion in what he's not showing you or telling you.... without the icon baggage that Bogie had (not a fan of icons).

It was also the first time I'd seen a black man treated as an equal or "one of the good guys". The only other thing I'd seen Woody Strode in was "Spartacus" and I can't remember another actor using their physicality to greater effect (Brando maybe....)

Claudia Cardinale was just the most beautiful woman ever captured on film. More than Ingrid Bergman, more than Gene Tierney, more than Ava Gardner. It was entirely believable that Ralph Bellamy would hire men to bring her back from Mexico. I would.

A movie star that could act, Burt Lancaster has never been bad in any movie. That said, not one of my favorite performances in this one, but still great. (Judgement at Nuremberg my personal favorite)

Conrad Hall's cinematography and Maurice Jarre's music also were exceptional.

Great film. Go see for yourself.

And to return for a moment to a previous post, I think "obsolete" as IP uses it to describe himself and the Jaguar E-Type is just a trick of leftist demagoguery. Anything the left doesn't like is "outmoded" or "discredited" or "obsolete." Those words apply to any idea that doesn't conform to what the left wants you to believe.

To reasonable people, obsolete simply means widely supplanted by something more useful (as the telegraph eventually was by other electronic media). Does anyone claim that applies to InstaPunk?

A few thoughts in defense of Deadwood. (Not that I'm proposing it for the Top 10 list.)

The case against:

* The cussing. This is the only explicit argument against it I've been able to find in the vast InstaPunk archives. The head writer says the anachronistic cussing is necessary to convey the tone of conversation between lower-class citizens in a rough-and-tumble environment, because the cussing they would have been likely to use at the time would have included religious references that wouldn't pack the same wallop for modern audiences. I suspect this is about 50 percent of his motivation, and the other 50 percent is that he just likes writing dialogue with a lot of cuss words in it. In any event I find the cussing more amusing than shameful, but I concede that's due to whatever part of my mindset is "thoroughly modern."

* Aimlessness. You get the sense, both from the show and from the featurettes included on the DVDs, that the writer doesn't have a plot arc planned out. He's improvising from episode to episode (though he does have the overarching concern of how a lawless frontier camp becomes an orderly town). Any edifying moral lessons you may encounter are by-products rather than aims of the story.

* General political correctness/leftist indoctrination. I'm mentioning this as a "straw man" argument against the show but I'm not sure it's anything more than that. You've got the whore who becomes a sympathetic character, her pimp-cum-gang-boss who becomes a sympathetic character, the two female sympathetic characters who eventually get down to bumping donuts, etc. All I can say is that the show presents good and bad aspects of everyone and leaves it to the viewer to draw whatever conclusions he may.

The case for:

* The language. The writer deliberately strove for a style that combined the floridity and formality of a Victorian education and milieu with the coarseness of a bunch of pushy migrant white trash trying to strike it rich. It may be the most affected dialogue I've ever witnessed in a TV show, but it's unique, memorable, and often doubly hilarious because of its very artificiality.

* The actors. Each of them is endlessly watchable and buys into the production 100 percent.

* The cinematography. I know some InstaPunk contributors have argued in the past that good visuals aren't as tough to achieve as many believe and don't prove anything about the worth of the product, e.g., Kubrick's movies. Could be. But if in real life I'm a sucker for a pretty face, I don't see why I shouldn't be a sucker for a pretty show too.

* The villainy. Even though it's a show that leaves much moral judgment up to the viewer, it does present many deeds that are clearly foul and doesn't try to claim they aren't. Now, the person responsible for the foul deed may turn around and do something commendable next week. That doesn't mean he has redeemed himself. I suppose what I'm trying to get at is that, though the show is not preachy, it does make an effort to goad the conscience into weighing events.

Bud and Bill:

That's what I'm talking about. You make your case.

Entirely legitimate arguments, though nothing that changes my list. As I said, the list is too short.

Though I admit -- anything with William Holden in it is a keeper for sure. And the score for Once Upon a Time in the West is piercingly wistful.

Negatives? Never needed arterial spray in slow motion to command my attention. And I always suspected that I'd like Once Upon a Time in the West better if I were watching under the influence of some potent, universe-slowing opiate. Operatic is NOT synonymous with glacial. But when health issues require me to fall back on morphine in the final moments of life, I suspect I'll finally appreciate OUATITW.

A very derivative work, but that sort of defines the term "homage" doesn't it? Great actors, good roles, visually stunning cinematography, and absolutely gorgeous music.

"If they move, kill 'em..." Yup, the Wild Bunch was Peckinpah's style, violent and more violent. But look at the cast: William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, Emond O'Brien, Warren Oates...all aged to perfection. Not only that, the story takes place in 1913, long after most people thought the West was no longer wild.

I saw this in the movie theater in '69 when it came out. The slo-mo violence, multi-camera angles and raw toughness of the characters set it apart from previous westerns, and still does.

The West was a violent place. I think The Wild Bunch hit that nail on the head better than other westerns. It may lack some of the character development mentioned, but for good old cowboy shoot-em-up, it's hard to beat.

It would be nice if people included links for their additional nominations. Permit me to react to the mentions thus far:

True Grit. The new one. I found it disappointing after having much anticipated it. A lot of waiting for a good third act.

The Wild Bunch. I undersstand, but wasn't Peckinpah always more about violence than a good story or engaging characters?

Thinking of Lee Marvin, "Oh, there's gonna be a hangin' in Wolf City, Wyoming..." He was a lot of fun in Cat Ballou. I actually bought a DVD of it for $2.99 a couple of years ago.

Thanks for the list. The ones I haven't seen are now in my Netflix queues. (Seven of them to be precise, though one -- Fire Creek -- isn't available.) The three I have seen, I'm happy to see in the list.

And now for my "I heart Louis CK" moment. I can watch the whole three-season run of Deadwood over and over again. So there.

Agree with most except yeah... got to have Red River and perhaps the most underrated western of all time - The Professionals. If I had to be ridin' in the Old West, sure like to have Lee Marvin, Burt Lancaster and especially Woody Strode with me. Richard Brooks doesn't get the acclaim he deserves as a director. The Professionals and In Cold Blood SHOULD have cemented his place as one of the all time greats, but alas no one remembers him. Sad.

I would nominate "The Englishman's Boy". It is told in two different eras fifty years apart. The first is in Saskatchawan in the Cypress Hills, 1873, where a Native band is attacked by American wolvers who came north looking for stolen horses.

The second era intertwined in the movie with the first era is Hollywood in the 1920's where a movie mogal ( Bob Hoskins ) wants to make a "Birth of a Nation" type of epic about the west. He manages to trick a writer into interviewing the character ( Michael Eisnor and later Nicholas Campbell) who was at the massacre and now works with and is a friend to cowboy stunt men. Reluctantly the old man tells his story but is angered when he realises what the mogol has done to his tale.

A very dark and gritty movie. The best western I have ever seen.
