I like "A Midnight Clear" by Will Wharton. The scene with the German and American soldier frozen together was poignant. "The Painted Bird" by Kozinski captures that eery peaceful freeze that grips landlocked Europe for a few months every year. German winters were fun, unless you had to be in the field in Weisbaden or Geiselbach

As for film, Fargo makes the best cinematographic use of snow of any movie, maybe. I personally like the underrated "Ice Harvest" with John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton.

I am deep in the middle of a "Northern Exposure" marathon. A little background investigation on Janine Turner reveals she is a Republican of the Tea Party type. It is fun to go through the mortified YouTube comments of the good liberals who are disheartened to learn that an attractive (beautiful, actually) woman could be so conservative.
