Doh the Movie:

"I'm a coward because I choose to not reveal myself to an arrogant, ignorant, entitled, petulent douchebag with visions of grandeur who thinks that the blogsphere is the real world?"

Uh huh. If you really thought you could prevail against someone so vulnerable as "an arrogant, ignorant, entitled, petulent douchebag with visions of grandeur who thinks that the blogsphere is the real world," I'd be hearing nothing but self-revelation, including all your qualifications for sneering at me -- parentage, schooling, experience, career, etc. Instead, you scream names, shout foolish imprecations, and run.

Nixon wasn't done in by insiders. He was done in by the press, who hated him. He earned their hate. Only their own professionalism could have prevented what happened. Fortunately for you and your hysterical causes, they had none.

Here's what I do know. You're too young to remember a time when people respected the President of the United States. Maybe nobody should. But some of us are old enough to believe that there were advantages to that naive time. Read this:

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/Commentary/com-6_7_05_TS.html

Once again, I'm sure you're past pausing to think ("arrogant... whining... petulant... douchebag" sounds like a projection of self recognition to me, my friend), but if I'm right in my basic guess, you grew up in the post-Watergate period, and you have no idea what it would be like to live in a world imbued with some sense of honor and respect.

I feel sorry for you. Go in peace.

Doh the Movie  2005-06-04 10:12:00

Blow it out your ass you whining sack of shit.

You initiated the ad hominem, then have the gall and arrogance to point fingers?

Please, tell me, what would knowing who I am lend to the lack of debate? Give you a name and an address? Lend credibility to know if I'm someone who you should actually RESPECT?

You are such a manipulating idiot.

Bloggers reveal themselves. Commenters hide in the shadows revealing nothing about themselves -- not their age, their education, their experience, their source of ideas. Their secrecy is their weapon -- oh, you didn't get that fact right about ME. Who are you, cartoon dude?

Again, please, tell me, what will "revealing myself" have to do with lending any credibility, other than giving you fodder for flaming me or worshipping me cause I 'm somone you "shoud know".

You really are a clown. Bad diversionary tactic.

And, since you launched into ad hominem, that's all you deserve. It's the peak of your skills.

To date.

Now, to the "meat", pathetic as it is:

Okay, I'll take your bait. I did live through the Watergate saga. I am a student of the scandal. I know about the break-in, the cover-up, the tapes, the special prosecutor soap opera, the congressional hearings, the press frenszy, all of it. I was no fan of Nixon, because he was not a real conservative -- wage & price controls, defeat with honor, etc --but I have also studied Watergate in detail. Nixon was hardly the first president the press could have taken down -- FDR lied or misrepresented his health, JFK lied and misrepresented his health and his personal life, LBJ was corrupt about money, connections, and the facts of the Vietnam War. Who did the press finally decide to kill? Nixon. With great fervor, self-righteousness, and ethical carelessness. Am I impressed? Yes. By the convenient morality of the press.

Bait? Hardly. But, think in your terms if you must. If it makes you feel better.

First of all, if you are such a "student' of Watergate, you'd understand that it wasn't the press that took down Nixon. It was insiders. Repbublican's specifically, who took down their own. The press merely printed the information they were given. As is the function of a free press. Obviously, such a concept does not fit into your views. Sad that.

Nixon was a traitor, he betrayed his oath of office, and he was surrounded by traitors and criminals who broke the law, and he condoned and ordered it. Full knowledge. That's what Watergate was about. Nixon betrayed the Constitution. And, he was turned in by his own. Period.

But, since you are obviously an ideological stooge, admitting that "one of your own" was a piece of shit and a traitor, well, gee, it hurts, doesn't it?

So, bringing up LBJ and JFK in that context simply shows your complete LACK of understanding of the topic.

By your fucked up logic, the immoral and illegal deeds of previous Dem President's (who weren't caught) means that the deeds of the successive Republican Presidents was okay?

That is the old, tried and true "the only mistake Nixon made was getting caught" argument.

How boring and retread of you.

Although, honestly I can not say that I expected MORE from you.

Do I think in boxes? Maybe. But my boxes are bigger than your whole mind. When you stab Caesar, you'd better be ready to stand in the forum with your bloody knife and take responsibility for what you've done. Oh my God. Thae American president is Caesar? Yes. He's the leader of the world, whether you like it or not. Stab him by all means, but be man enough to show the blade.

Your boxes are bigger than my mind.... Hmmm. Don't you mean Your penis is bigger? Is that what you've come to Punk? Man. You are a fucking loser.

You seem to be taking this "Caesar" stuff pretty personally. Wow. You seem to equate your own ego with your leaders. Are you Caesar? What a fucking tool! What an ego! What a moroon! What an iimbecile! They say laughter is healing. Thanks to you, today, I will live to be 150 years old.

And, as a Patriot, an American and proud of it, I can do or say whatever I want, about whomever I want. If I don't like my President, I will speak it from the top of the mountian, for all to hear. It held true when I spoke out against Clinton, it holds true when I speak out against Bush.

If you have a problem with that, I suggest that you are going to be in for a rude awakening.

Show the blade? Blow it out your ass. You think too much of yourself and your limited place in the debate.

You are a pretender. Riding on someone elses fame and audience.

I'll stick by by my ad-hominem attacks on you. You reveal no part of yourself except your illiterate way with words. You run in and attack as if from a superior position, but you can't be both superior and a faceless nameless sniper. You ARE a coward. Reveal yourself or go to hell.

Again, blow it out your ass.

I'm a coward because I choose to not reveal myself to an arrogant, ignorant, entitled, petulent douchebag with visions of grandeur who thinks that the blogsphere is the real world?

How cute. You really do take yourself much too seriously. Sad, considering that you are obviously not very smart.

I reply only because I think you are cute when you try to think outside of your big huge long box.

InstaPunk  2005-06-04 01:34:00

Doh:

"I await your bilious and know-it-all response."

You do not disappoint. Answer this. Bloggers reveal themselves. Commenters hide in the shadows revealing nothing about themselves -- not their age, their education, their experience, their source of ideas. Their secrecy is their weapon -- oh, you didn't get that fact right about ME. Who are you, cartoon dude?

Doh the Movie  2005-06-02 12:42:00

Instapunk goes for the ignorant, whining ad hominem tactic.... How utterly suprising.

Nothing better have you to say?

Here's a bot of point by point, cause however much you hate me, I still wuv u.

So you are pretending to appeal to "true Americans," however you conceive them.

Pretending? Hardly. No better tactic than simply attacking me by contesting my patriotisim? I suppose not. Do I ask too much of you? Probably. I'm so very disappointed.

Which proves you a cynical Machiavellian lout. You speak too intimately about events you were not privy to and probably antedated your appearance on earth. Your coldness is probably derived vicariously from Marxist cant. You are a drifter in a hand-me-down swamp of political amorality.

You think in such nice little boxes Punk. How cute. Machiavellian? Hardly. It's just a simple act of recognizing the great number of contradictory elements that make up the Watergate issue and spending a great deal of time investigating it as history.

Too intimate with information? No. I am simply well versed in the Watergate affair, which, contrary to your opinion (which is wrong. Gee imagine that.) I did indeed live through, and experienced in real time. And, I've been reading and studying it as an event for over thirty years.

Can you say the same? It's a genuine question.

You're absolutely welcome to argue any of the points I have made in the previous comments, but, you seem so much more inclined to simply insult me, make presumptions on both my intentions, intellect and political leanings.

Do you really think that your opinion on such matters has any chance of actually being correct?

I suppose you actually do.

How sad.

It is so much easier though, isn't it? You might tax yourself if you actually had to think about this and likely any other issue.

Now, if you want, I'll gladly line up with the others and suck your balls while you look in the mirror at yourself and dream that your fucking opinion is actually worth a turds ransom.

Is that language that gets you excited? Am I typing too fast for you?

Hmmm. Marxist cant. Actually, no. Keep trying. I'm sure you have lots of arrows and much time to shoot at phantoms.

Personal honor? Yes. Well founded.

But, quite simply, not for your eyes. Simple as that.

Too bad. There was a chance for an interesting discussion there for a bit.

Too bad a douchebag came along and ruined it.

For the record. I'm a registered Independent who voted GOP in the past eight Presidential elections.

Sorry to throw cold water onto your circle jerk Instapunk.

As you were assclown.

Gughunter  2005-06-01 09:22:00

Once again you've pointed out some noteworthy facets of an issue I hadn't thought about much at all -- aside from being faintly regretful that the Ben-Stein-as-Deep-Throat theory wasn't true, because that would have been really cool. (And as it turns out, he's just published an essay that's pretty rough on Felt too, though it uses a different line of argument.)

carla  2005-06-01 07:34:00

Congrats. You've been nominated:

http://www.preemptivekarma.com/archives/2005/05/sh5_1.html#c5762

InstaPunk  2005-06-01 04:59:00

Doh: You say this --

"True American [sic] should have no problem with the fact that Nixon was destroyed by his own, from within."

And this --

True Americans will do what needs to be done regardless of their party affiliation, if laws are being broken and the liberty and rights of Americans are being abused."

So you are pretending to appeal to "true Americans," however you conceive them. Then you say:

"Given what was at stake, can anyone truly say that they would do any different, if revealing that information would likely save your life by giving you a certain clout and protection?"

Which proves you a cynical Machiavellian lout. You speak too intimately about events you were not privy to and probably antedated your appearance on earth. Your coldness is probably derived vicariously from Marxist cant. You are a drifter in a hand-me-down swamp of political amorality.

FYI, there are things worth losing your career for, things worth dying for, and honor is not a foil for expediency. The president of the United States is a target, if aimed at, that requires a man to stand in the open when he takes aim and fires. You know nothing of what "true Americans" would or would not do under any circumstances because you have no sense of personal honor.

But this is a quaint notion that no words will ever explain to you. I await your bilious and know-it-all response.

AST  2005-06-01 04:48:00

I've always thought that Watergate started when JFK got elected in 1960. Nixon knew about the fraud that prevented his election then and it stuck in his craw, probably more so because he didn't feel that he could go public with it. His ideas about how hardball politics was played were formed from seeing how Kennedy, LBJ and Hoover operated, and he decided he had to do the same. But he was bad at it. It didn't fit him. He wasn't cagy and ruthless enough. Kennedy probably wouldn't have made tapes of all his conversations, and it he had they would have been destroyed before their existence became known.

Nixon tried to play that game by surrounding himself with people he saw as tough and underhanded, but he and they bungled it. He didn't have the instincts of a true player.

What he did was a crime, both legally and figuratively, not only by obstructing justice but by failing to insulate himself from the cover up.

The whole thing was as stupid as it could be, much like Clinton's dalliance with Monica, because 1. Nothing stays secret in Washington and

2. Once it gets out the press an the opposing party go into a feeding frenzy that distracts attention from everything else. The media always wail about this, but they keep talking about the scandal anyway.

I don't mind Felt's family getting some dough out of this. Everybody else seems to have gotten book deals, including Nixon himself.

I have a theory that Republicans just don't have it in them to be as hard-nosed and politically tough as Democrats. Just look at the deal on the filibusters. Nixon's fellow Republicans abandoned him when the facts started to come out. Clinton's formed a solid front and criticized the Republicans for not being bipartisan. Republicanism is a philosophy. Democratism is a street gang.

Doh the Movie  2005-06-01 04:40:00

It's not really been that much of a secret that Felt was Deep Throat. Most in the know considered him at the top of a list of five people. And, recently, if you do a Google news search, in January, there has been speculation that Deep Throat was "near death".

Felt's condition is generally stated to be not good. He apparently has no real memory of his past, due to a stroke.

So, being paraded like a puppet of history waving to the cameras is something he is apparently unable to take any real responsibility for...

Ultimately, it's likely a reaction to the families concern, voiced by Felt during his lifetime, that his epitath and life be understood the way he wanted it to be understood.

In the context of what was occurring at the time, Felt did the wise thing.

Once Hoover was dead, he was really not protected.

Also, Felt was a criminal. He was violating Constitutional law and procedure, at the behest of the Nixon Administration.

And, Felt was not alone in his beliefs that what was going on in the Nixon White House was problematic. Nixon's downfall was from the inside out. Look at the short list of those considered to be possible Deep Throats. It's all GOP hardliners. Why? Because Watergate became an internal struggle within the GOP and within the Nixon White House.

As Hoover's right hand, Felt was simply in a position to see all sides, and had the proof.

This was well known. More than not, Felt's Deep Throat role was a matter of self preservation than anything.

When Hoover died, everyone in power was like "what happened to the files? What did he know?"

Felt knew. He also knew that he was comprimised and vulnerable.

All of this came to a head at once...

If you listen to the Nixon tapes, it all makes total sense...

His paranoia was legendary, but not without basis in some fact.

The truth is, Nixon was under attack from all quarters. Most especially from within his own power circle.

He was his own worst enemy, and it fed upon itself.

Nixon's downfall was internal, from within his own party and power circle.

Felt was just the only person alive who had the "big picture".

Given what was at stake, can anyone truly say that they would do any different, if revealing that information would likely save your life by giving you a certain clout and protection?

vittles scooper  2005-06-01 04:29:00

Why did Felt opt going to journalists as opposed to the Attorney General? The administration was so controlled by Nixon by then there would have been a Big Cover-Up - it was the smartest way to insure that the truth ultimately got out to the public.

James  2005-06-01 03:36:00

Felt did leave the FBI in 1973, so it is in his favor that he didn't simply go back to work afterward. While his hiding in the shadows does come off as showing some guilt about his role, I think I'd almost prefer that -- an acknowledgement that even if the end was justified, the means may not have been -- than the latter-day habit of public grandstanding in order to get a tabloid/book deal and some airtime before your 15 min. are up.

At this point, too, it's very questionable how much control the 91-year-old Felt has over this situation beyond the actual admission. The family may be more to blame for any stench of profit-seeking.

alfagrey  2005-06-01 03:27:00

Who bought the movie rights? Will it be released with the original Deep Throat so we can determine who the real hero is? My money's on Linda.

balckminorcapullets  2005-06-01 02:43:00

Yeah - what did Nixon ever do except stand up against the Communists that had in the prior 30 years liquidated 80 million - the same communists that were on the verge of committing genocide against another 20 million .

Nixon was the only thing stopping genocide in Laos and Cambodia - they needed to get rid of him so that Jimmy "I Never Lied to You" Carter could preside over the last leftist genocide of the century.

And did I mention ending the Viet Nam war and starting the EPA?

Doh the Movie  2005-06-01 02:42:00

FIrst of all, Felt was responding to the inner power struggles within the GOP. Watergate was a GOP infight. Period. The list of "probable" deep throats reads like a who's who list of the powerful within the party. Why? Because it was a fight for survival... a longterm battle between the FBI and the Nixon Administration that had been raging for years. Once Hoover died, Nixon was done for...

Felt used what he could before he was hung out to dry. As did every other person involved in what amounted to a crime against the American people.

Felt broke the law too. How to you avoid that? Out the big fish.

Think about why such a man would pardoned by Reagan years later...

People who are pardoned by Presidents are meant to be signals to loyalists and enemies alike.

Thing is, enemies are rarely if ever pardoned....

Felt was and is considered a loyalist by those wihtin the inner circle of the GOP at that time. (Many of who are still with us today.)

Nixon betrayed many peoples view of what constitutes a free and democratic government.

He regularly called for the abuse of Constitutional protections... including the wiretapping of US servicemen and patriots.

True American should have no problem with the fact that Nixon was destroyed by his own, from within.

True Americans will do what needs to be done regardless of their party affiliation, if laws are being broken and the liberty and rights of Americans are being abused.

blackminorcapullets  2005-06-01 02:37:00

Great Article!

Yes, the sleaze of the MSM has a direct lineage from Kerry's attacks on the Swift Boat people to Dan Rather, to Blair and Duranty and now Felt.

What a great time to be living - 70 years of relativist obfuscs uncoverfed for what they are.

noah  2005-06-01 02:23:00

IS it just me, or does Mark Felt bear an uncanny resemblance to Marshall Applewhite, leader of the heaven's gate cult?

I

mike a  2005-06-01 02:19:00

Question for the lawyers: Can someone benefit from a crime they committed, and admitted to, if they are precluded from prosecution due to the statute of limitations? I thought there were laws about criminals benefitting from their crimes.

Randy m  2005-06-01 02:07:00

Great article. Have you considered a career in Journalism. yours would be a refreshing voice in the wilderness of liberal media..

Bill Pierson  2005-06-01 02:00:00

I think the comments on this should be funnier. Everybody's talking so serious about a guy called Deep Throat. DEEP THROAT. And nobody but this site has the smarts to make a joke of it. More laughs, less sermonizing, okay?

Sam  2005-06-01 01:55:00

How can you possibly be comparing Mark Felt to a presidential assassin? Say what you want about the man's politics - and/or reasons for coming to the reporters - but he never killed the man, and by almost all accounts, Richard Nixon was breaking the law left and right.

Criticize him if you must, but to compare him to John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald seems grossly unfair.

Jerry  2005-06-01 01:42:00

Felt is a historical footnote and after the week-in-review sum-up on the weekend he'll be forgotten. Nixon was guilty of crimes and was punished. So was Clinton but he didn't have the decency to resign. That's the main difference.

N. Beckmann  2005-06-01 01:18:00

So we got rid of Richard Nixon and wound up with Jimmy Carter.

Leland  2005-06-01 01:10:00

Let's get the facts straight, Mark Felt claims he came public as "Deep Throat", so that his family can get some money off his fame. He probably will from some people, whose ethics are ideological.

It doesn't take much effort to find quotes from Mark Felt of a few years to go to judge the Mark Felt of 2005. The guy is uncredible and admitted as much. Now he wants some recognition and money for it. The sad part is some people are willing to give him both.

James Stephenson  2005-06-01 12:52:00

Some of you have missed this mans point. He did it to advance his career not for the reason given. He thought when Hoover died he would get the top spot. But Nixon gave it to a politician, someone out of the FBI circle jerk. Which is a good thing, echo chambers are horrible.

So to get back at Nixon and hopefully get that top spot he turned over information to the reporters. He was a back stabber and how some of you can want anything to do with him is amazing. Now had he told everyone who he was in the day, then yes hero and altruistic. But basically he was a snake in the grass hoping to get the fat rat.

I have no dog in this hunt, too young for nixon. Looking at it from that viewpoint makes my opinion. Oh and would those reporters have been so quick had it been McGovern? That is a question people should be asking.

Petro  2005-06-01 12:48:00

Good post.

Thank you.

  2005-06-01 12:39:00

Foster:<>

Isn't there? If you say so, I suppose. But I think you've made my point for me. If he was really acting from conscience, he should have been willing to go public, at least after the fact, to help dispel the poisonous mythology of Watergate. Bad as Nixon was, I don't see any honor here... As to Buchanan, I don't make the big liberal mistake of opposing everything espoused by a politician I dislike. I oppose what I normally oppose, and if we're on the same side every so often, good for him.

wally bangs  2005-06-01 12:16:00

Good post, well said, and all that. What amazes me about the Nixon haters on the Left is that Nixon was not a conservative. He instituted price controls, appointed liberal judges to the Supreme Court, got us out of the Vietnam War, and started the relationship with Communist China that is responsible for much of the current global economy. You'd think they'd love the dude. Sure he was a paranoid bully who authorized the bombing of Cambodia, but that doesn't make the guy evil incarnate. Felt only blew the whistle to protect his own turf - the same thing Nixon was trying to achieve by breaking into the Democratic headquarters. The "Me Decade" could not have been more aptly named. They are no heroes here, just a bunch of zeroes.

Geek, Esq.  2005-06-01 12:16:00

The fact remains that he did the Republic a great service by bringing down the Nixon regime.

Curious how 99% of the denunciations are flying from rightwing sources.

Foster  2005-06-01 12:07:00

I disagree.

Coming out as No. 2 FBI wouldn't have had as much effect as showing Woodward & Bernstein the way to the goods-and besides, there are limits to how much one man will do altruistically when it hurts his career. According to Woodward, Felt thought he might, one day, be FBI head and it appears to me like the man wanted to serve his consciense while protecting himself. There's no shame in that.

His family might be sleazy, but Nixon was a sleasebag, and while I might not call Felt a hero, exactly, ill happily shake his hand and thank him for what he did.

Besides, friend, how did you find yourself on a side with that other great sleasebag, Pat Buchanan?
